Introduction

The number of overweight and obese kids is growing at a phenomenal rate. Most children today sit too much and play too little. A recent study  has found that children who spend a lot of time playing video games are more likely to become overweight or obese.

'Play and Move' will try to change that. We want children to go outside and play computer games. We will be using small handheld computers. And to play the game, they actually have to move!

This type of gaming is called 'location based gaming' and this term is derived from the terms Location Based Service (LBS)  and Location Based Media (LBM)

An example: If you would play 'Pac-Man' in a location based manner, you would be running trough the street picking up virtual dots, chased by virtual ghosts. These virtual dots and virtual ghosts can only be seen on your handheld computer, but running through the streets is real! This mix of reality and virtual reality is called 'augmented reality'.

We believe the above experience can be accomplished by combining modern technology such as the Global Positioning System (GPS)  and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)  with small handheld computers like Smartphones  or PDA's

'Play and Move' won the final of the Dutch national innovation contest  in 2006.
